Stop Stress by destroying everything in new WiiWare game November 2, 2009

Posted by JC Fletcher in : action , comments closed

Stop Stress sounds like one of those My Coach non-games for DS: based on the title, we’d assume it would be full of relaxing exercises and tips about reducing the strain of daily life. But Abylight’s Stop Stress: A Day of Fury on WiiWare encourages its players to take their stress out on the virtual world by beating everything nearby to pieces.

Swinging the Wii Remote to control the arm of Jack, a stressed-out guy in a world that grows increasingly hostile as he gets more worked up, players use bats, axes, and other weapons to smash everything in sight. According to the ESRB description, “One mission is to ’search and destroy all the alarm-clocks’ by using a soft slipper; another mission requires players to ‘break all the windows and escape from the evil traffic jam.’”

Publisher Abylight expects to release Stop Stress this fall. Try not to get too anxious for it!

Tomena Sanner running to North American WiiWare in Q1 October 29, 2009

Posted by JC Fletcher in : action, konami , comments closed

Konami has announced a North American release for its one-button WiiWare action game Tomena Sanner. The mobile port stars a businessman named Hitoshi Susumu who must run to an “ultimate dance party” to get there on time — and who has the terrible luck to face obstacles like chorus lines, T-Rexes, lizardmen, and Frankenstein’s Monsters.

The game uses a single button to control Susumu’s jumps, as well as attacks, basketball dunks, and whatever the situation calls for. It’s like Canabalt, but with more dancing. All the while, a running commentary on Susumu’s progress displays at the top of the screen. It also includes split screen multiplayer for up to four.

Tomena Sanner will be out, unfortunately, in Q1 2010.

Crystal Bearers also has a ballroom dancing minigame October 19, 2009

Posted by JC Fletcher in : action, rpg, square-enix , comments closed

Famitsu revealed two “event” minigames in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers. We knew about the vaguely embarrassing pool float minigame, and we’ve actually seen hints of the other minigame in the trailer: ballroom dancing. This seems to take place in the scene in which Layle steals some guy’s tuxedo to sneak into an event, and involves rotating the Wiimote and Nunchuk to simulate dancing movements.

In the E3 demo, the game was full of diverting events like this. A rail shooter segment opened the game, followed by an airship piloting segment. The main enemy-tossing game will be broken up by events like this one, which finally fulfills the promise of Final Fantasy VIII’s most famous scene.

COP: The Recruit: The Trailer October 16, 2009

Posted by JC Fletcher in : action, ubisoft , comments closed

Ubisoft is releasing COP: The Recruit, its open-world, openly derivative DS cop game, on November 3. To promote the upcoming release, Ubisoft sent out this new trailer that shows off not only the impressive 3D found in the title, but the impressive variety of gameplay. There are shooting segments, interactions with security cameras and other equipment, and, of course, the combination of on-foot and driving gameplay found in a certain other series.

Like always, however, we take issue with the use of a tiny, floating DS to display this gameplay footage. Seeing one screen at a time is preferable to the extreme zoom-out — and if you have to show the whole DS, please hold it still! We’re trying to look at the game you’re showing us.

Last Flight resurfaces as an episodic game October 8, 2009

Posted by JC Fletcher in : action , comments closed

Remember Last Flight, the WiiWare vampires-on-a-plane game from Nibris expats Bloober Team? Sebastian from Any Given Gamer did, noticing a Tweet from executive producer Marcin Kawa that sort of indirectly referred to the game. He guessed that it meant news about Last Flight would be on the way, and he was right!

Bloober Team sent out some screenshots today! The last time we saw the game was over a year ago and just as concept art, so we’re thrilled to see actual screens of food critic Larry Adelman taking out some vampires. In a fact sheet, Bloober Team outlined the game’s motion-based slashing: each hand is mapped to either the Wiimote or Nunchuk, and moving the controller swings the weapon.

The game is being divided into four episodes, to make it “as accessible and affordable as possible.” According to Bloober Team, the game is comparable to a boxed Wii release, but the bite-sized purchases remove a barrier to entry for people not sure about buying a game from a new team.

Perhaps the most surprising news: Eurogamer says that the game will be out this year!

Bear witness to these Crystal Bearers images October 6, 2009

Posted by JC Fletcher in : action, final-fantasy, square-enix , comments closed

GAME Watch has rounded up the known details of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers’s story and setting, including the disappearance of the Yukes and the existence of the Crystal Bearers, a few people with mysterious psychic powers. There’s also apparently one crystal “idol” for each species. There’s a lot more in the writeup, but after TGS, we’re hoping to take a short break from squinting at Japanese text really hard.

Luckily, the really relevant part of the article is the huge assortment of screenshots, along with concept art like the piece seen here. Crystal Bearers is out November 12 in Japan and December 26 in North America.

Review: Muramasa: The Demon Blade September 15, 2009

Posted by JC Fletcher in : action , comments closed

I was honestly a bit worried about being able to review Muramasa: The Demon Blade objectively, because this game was, from the outset, completely up my alley. Making a fully 2D sidescrolling action game with lots of combo-based swordfighting and a Japanese mythological setting is like titling the game JC Will Buy This, as there is no component of that game description for which I am not a sucker.

What keeps me honest? Professionalism the other side of that coin — if the game worked I may be more likely than most to love it, sure, but if there was anything wrong with it, my disappointment would come out pretty harshly. Luckily, I don’t have to worry about my personal biases getting in the way, as I’m quite certain this is a great action game.

A Boy and His Boy-Shaped Blob in a new trailer September 5, 2009

Posted by JC Fletcher in : action , comments closed

WayForward has done something fairly magical with its gorgeous remake of A Boy and His Blob — it’s made the game look appealing even to someone who has played the NES game recently enough to remember the abject frustration, untinged by nostalgia. In fact, we think this game is lovely enough to attract players who don’t even know there was another game.

This ‘launch’ trailer (though the game isn’t out until October) includes some animated story sequences, the use of which shouldn’t be much of a surprise in a hand-drawn game. It also includes a quick look at some delightful jellybean-granted Blob abilities, like a mech and some kind of “boy” shape.

Sonic and the Black Knight scann’d and quartered July 22, 2008

We promised an update, so here we are! That oft-discussed Nintendo Power cover did contain some righteous screens of Sonic and the Black Knight within its papery (Remember paper? The stuff you learned stuff from before the internet?) depths, and we commandeered the above shot for your viewing pleasure.
This new Sonic adventure takes the series in a new direction which, as evidenced by fans continuously lamenting the destruction of the franchise, is sorely needed. The initial reaction hasn’t been positive, as fans don’t expect this game to be some kind of salvation. Some gameplay details have been revealed, including multiple characters (namely Shadow and Knuckles), different sword maneuvers, and a system which earns knighthood points depending on your good or bad actions during levels. Oh, and his sword is named Calibur, and it talks.
Well, we all wanted Sonic to go really fast, and that turned out [...]

Classic control scheme for High Voltage’s other game July 22, 2008

The Conduit, The Conduit, The Conduit — that’s all we media types bang on about when it comes to High Voltage. But the Illinois-based studio also has a WiiWare game in the pipeline: the scarcely covered Animales de la Muerte, a bloodthirsty shooter set in a Mexican zoo that has been overrun by zombie animals. Let’s say that again, shall we: a Mexican zoo that has been overrun by zombie animals. It looks a bit like Samba de Amigo crossed with the gore of MadWorld, and if that’s not potential GOTY material, we have no idea what is.
And it gets better. High Voltage’s Micah Skaritka just confirmed to WiiWare World that Animales would feature Classic Controller support, allowing players to move with the left analog stick and fire with the right, a configuration that Skaritka compares to Smash TV (but which also reminded us of Geometry Wars [...]
